Reflection – A Key Habit at School Beyond Limitations

 

John Dewey once said, “We do not learn from experience… we learn from reflecting on experience.” This article speaks to both SBL students and facilitators. Together, we form a dynamic, learning-focused community committed to lifelong growth, personal discovery, and development. For us at SBL, consistent reflection is essential for continuous growth and self-improvement.

The Power of Daily Reflection
Every day, we engage in purposeful reflection on our learning journeys, setting clear and meaningful goals for progress. This practice helps us all understand our educational needs. As lifelong learners, reflection lets us plan the next steps in our journey, enhancing skills like self-awareness, self-management, and decision-making.

Our Reflective Practices at SBL

Daily, students and facilitators pause to answer key questions: *“What went well today?”* and *“What could be improved?”* Reflection allows us to appreciate the day’s achievements, sparks inspiration, deepens understanding, and empowers us to aim for even greater success.

How We Incorporate Reflection into Each Day

We dedicate specific times within lessons and throughout the week to reflect. Thoughts are captured throughout the day, encouraging both students and facilitators to assess experiences and explore new ideas. A reflection journal helps us note at least two observations each day, prompting us to consider adjustments or improvements for the future.

At the end of each lesson, we discuss what went well and what could improve. Facilitators engage students in conversation, uncovering insights and inspiration. Some facilitators even use voice memos to record thoughts, revisiting them later to deepen their reflective practice.

Collaborative Reflection Among Facilitators

In staff meetings, facilitators reflect on their experiences, sharing insights and discussing ways to enhance our practice. Peer observations provide constructive feedback, supporting a culture of careful reflection on our professional craft.

Building Connections Through Reflection

Reflective moments extend beyond the classroom. Weekly coffee chats with colleagues or mentoring sessions with students allow us to exchange ideas and strengthen bonds. These informal settings foster creativity, curiosity, and personal growth.

While these are just a few of the reflective practices at SBL, they are among the most impactful. By embedding reflection into our daily routines, both students and facilitators grow continually, becoming their best selves.
