Our recent SBL alumni meeting illustrated this point perfectly. Alumni shared experiences that go far beyond academic achievement. Around a third of alumni attended, while others sent messages of support, demonstrating that the bond with the school remains strong. This gathering was a space of co-creation, where current and former members of the community meet as equals, sharing perspectives and reflecting on the meaning of learning in life beyond the classroom.
Values That Extend Beyond the Curriculum
Alumni consistently highlighted key values that have stayed with them: unity, freedom, love, flexibility, togetherness, and respect for individuality. They emphasised that learning to think critically, ask questions, and take responsibility is more important than merely competing for grades. In a world where information can be accessed instantly and artificial intelligence provides answers within seconds, the alumni reinforced that the true goal of education is not test scores, but the formation of conscious, self-aware human beings.
Independence, Self-Directed Learning, and Human Connection
What helped alumni most during their SBL journey was the opportunity to develop independence and self-directed learning. They also appreciated the international and multilingual environment, conversations with facilitators, and the experience of learning connected to real life. Alumni were candid about areas where support could be strengthened, highlighting that at SBL, feedback is not about criticism but about contribution.
