Self-directed Learning for Students at School Beyond Limitations
Student-led learning at SBL, also known as learner-centred or self-directed learning, has clear advantages that are of enormous benefit to our students as opposed to a traditional learning model. Our students have a say in what and how they learn, they are thus more likely to be engaged and motivated and they have a personal stake in their education, undoubtedly leading to higher levels of interest and enthusiasm for their subject matter.
Our model encourages students to take ownership of their education.
They learn to set goals, make decisions, and manage their time effectively, which are valuable skills for lifelong learning and success in various aspects of life.
Every student at SBL is unique, and our model allows for customisation of their learning process. Students tailor their learning experiences to their individual interests, learning styles, and pace. This leads to a deeper understanding of the material.
By taking responsibility for their learning, our students are required to think critically. They analyse information, solve problems, and make decisions independently, fostering the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Our students actively participate in their learning process and explore topics that interest them, they are thus more likely to remember and retain the information over the long term. This contrasts with passive learning, which often results in shallow understanding and forgetfulness.
At School Beyond Limitations, our students set their own learning goals in collaboration with their mentors. This promotes self-awareness and helps our students to develop a sense of purpose in their studies. Our students are responsible for their own progress and learning outcomes. This instils a sense of accountability and helps them to develop a strong work ethic.
We prepare our students for the real world, where self-directed problem solving and learning are essential skills. Our students learn how to seek out information, adapt to changing circumstances, and stay motivated in the face of challenges.
Collaborative learning experiences are at the core of SBL. Our students need to communicate and negotiate with peers, facilitators, or mentors, which enhances their interpersonal and communication skills.
Our students have a say in their learning, thus they feel more satisfied with their educational experience. This satisfaction leads to a positive attitude toward learning and a greater willingness to pursue further education. SBL fosters a love for learning, we teach students how to learn, which is a skill they carry with them throughout their lives, making them more adaptable and open to continued self-improvement.
As a result of all of these factors our students experience less stress and anxiety in our environment, they have more control over their learning pace and they focus on topics that interest and motivate them.
